Ferrosilicon is an alloy of iron and silicon. It is mainly made of coke, steel chips and silicon dioxide. The origin of ferrosilicon in China is concentrated in areas rich in hydropower resources, Sichuan, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia and Inner Mongolia.

Application:

(1) The particularity of ferrosilicon makes it an indispensable deoxidizer (precipitation deoxygenation and diffusion deoxygenation) and alloying agent in the steelmaking industry, and it is widely used.

(2) The basic process of the structure of cast iron is the formation of graphite in cast iron. Si is an element that strongly promotes graphitization, so in the production of nodular cast iron, ferrosilicon is an important inoculation agent (to help graphite precipitation).

(3) Because the carbon content of high silicon ferrosilicon is very low, the chemical affinity of silicon and oxygen is also very large, therefore, high silicon ferrosilicon (or silicon alloy) is a more commonly used reducing agent in ferroalloy industry, used in the production of low carbon ferroalloy.

(4) In the production of magnesium by Pidgeonprocess or magnesium smelting in silicon, ferrosilicon is used as a reducing agent to reduce calcined dolomite to magnesium metal.
